Telenor users’ donation channelled in support of empoweringMyanmar youths

• Expected to train 900 young fresh graduates from remote areas

December 21st, 2016, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”), its local partner Network Activities Group (NAG) and the government’s Department of Rural Development jointly organize series of trainings to empower young people across Myanmar.

Trainingsfocusing on rural development and project management are aimed at supporting development of rural areas in Myanmar by helping prepare young people to be ready for participating in local development activities.





About 30 young people are participating in the first one-month training, which will complete on 27 December. Applications are now open for the second training that will begin in January. In total, 30 trainings will be held over the three-year period. The trainingscover topicsonproject management, development theories and concepts, environmental conservation and management, natural resources governance, political economy analysis, community infrastructure development,disaster risk reduction and response, and communications in development.

The training program is partly funded by donation from Telenor customers who joined the Telenor’s interactive “Stronger2gether”donation campaign organized in late September in conjunction with the company’s 2nd Anniversary. In October, on behalf of its customers Telenor handed over MMK 170 million (10 Kyat for each of its 17 million users) to three designated charitable organizations.

NAG is one of three recipient organizations and it received MMK 22.1 million based on the voting by the customers. Other two recipients are See Zar Yeik Old Age Care Center and Residential Nursery and Training School for Girls under Department of Social Welfare, Mandalay Region.

“Our donation campaign is a way for us to show gratitude to our customers by giving back to society. Part ofour customers’ donation will fund training scholarships to 900 rural youths over three years. We trust thistraining program will equip youths with rural development knowledge, facilitation and project management skills to enhance their long term employability,” Min Thu, Head of Business Sustainability at Telenor Myanmar.

Telenor & NAG cooperation in emergency response in 2016

As a responsible mobile operator Telenor is at the forefront of helping communities affected by natural disasters, and Telenor’s humanitarian relief support is channeled through NAG. In July2016,Telenor provided life-saving food items, drinking water, and cash assistance to nearly 27,000 flood affected people in Rakhine since its emergency relief efforts began in early July. Telenor funded MMK 86.4 million in response to the flooding in Rakhine, and provision of relief assistance was carried out by NAG in 62 villages in Minbya, Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U townships.

In August, 2016, Telenor provided MMK 163.49 million (MMK 1634.9 Lakh) to deliver relief assistance to at least 30,000 people in flood-affected areas along the rivers in Mandalay, Magway and Bago regions. The assistance, provided for the second time in response to frequent flooding during this monsoon, waschannelled through NAG.
