Telenor introduces lowest internet price plan

Press Release: 26 May 2015

• Most affordable rates, on the fastest growing internet network in Myanmar – with 99% 3G sites
• Underscores commitment to mass market and delivering Internet For All

May 26, 2015, Yangon – Telenor Myanmar Limited (“Telenor”) today announced a new internet price plan that underscores the company’s commitment to delivering the most affordable rates for mass market customers in Myanmar, and further strengthens the company’s Internet For All mission.

Effective May 27, 2015, Telenor’s ‘My Internet’ plan will be priced at 5 Kyats/MB, down from the previous price of 6 Kyat/MB. Telenor’s ‘Smart Internet’ plan meanwhile – offering speeds of up to 2 Mbps - will now be priced at only 6 Kyat/MB from the previous price of 10 Kyat/MB.

Weekly and monthly data packs for the ‘My Internet’ plan will be priced at 500 Kyats for a data quota of 110MB and 1,900 Kyats for 500MB respectively. There are two ‘Smart Internet’ plans, priced at 6,600 Kyat for 1,250MB and 11,900 for 2,400MB.>/p>

The ‘My Internet’ plan is pre-enabled for all SIMs, and available for all customers the moment they become a Telenor customer. To activate the ‘Smart Internet’ plan, customers need only SMS "smart" to 500. Customers only pay for what is used, and Telenor will help keep track of how much is spent throughout the usage period.

“The people in Myanmar can always trust that Telenor will have the most affordable voice and internet services, with the simplest and most transparent price plans, and a network that will reach as many cities, towns and villages as possible within the next 3-4 years,” said Mr. Petter Furberg, Chief Executive Officer of Telenor. “Myanmar’s telecoms sector is rapidly evolving, and we estimate that approximately 65% subscribers in the country are on smartphones. Within our own base of 6.4 million customers 65% are data users, and close to 60% are smartphone users. Our new internet price plans both reflects the growing appetite for data in Myanmar and is aimed at stimulating further internet adoption and usage. With this new pricing, Telenor’s customers can now enjoy the lowest internet rates on the fastest growing data network in Myanmar.”
Telenor provides mobile connectivity in ten major divisions and states, namely Mandalay, Yangon, Sagaing, Bago, Magway, Ayeyarwaddy, Kayin, Mon, and Kachin, and in union territory Nay Pyi Taw. The company has recently announced plans for expansion to Shan, Kayah and Thaninthari.

Fastest-growing data network in Myanmar
At present, Telenor has over 2,000 towers nationwide – 99% of these equipped with 3G capabilities - and is expected to roll out between 3,000 and 4,000 towers by end 2015. Since September 2014, Telenor has expanded its network to more than 50% of population and townships in Myanmar, and has more than 30,000 points-of-sales (POS) across the country.

“Apart from expanding coverage we are also focused on adding capacity and optimising quality in areas where we are already present. We are working hard to improve the quality of our network in the cities: in Yangon we have doubled the number of towers to more than 700 from 348 at the launch in October of last year, while in Mandalay we now have 345 towers turned on, from 70 at point of launch in September 2014. In February, we also opened a fibre link to Thailand, which continues to deliver significant improvement in data connectivity, and enhances our ability to deliver a quality experience of our network,” Mr. Furberg added.
