Most frequently asked questions

No. LTE and 4G are essentially the same format of mobile data and it is the best commercially available data standard in Myanmar. Specifically, 4G LTEmeans “fourth-generation long term evolution,” withLTEbeing a type of4Gthat delivers the fastest connection for a mobile internet experience – up to 10 timesfaster than3G.
Essentially, 3G and 4G networks do the same thing. Both are capable of connecting your phone to the internet. However, 3G networkis designed both for voice and data communication, while 4G is designed especially for data transmission. 4G offers up to 10 times faster access to data via your mobile phone with speeds commonly between 20Mbps and 50Mbps (which is really, really fast).
The difference between the speeds of 3G and 4G starts to show as the size of the files increases. This is due to the fact that 3G speeds ramp up over time, while 4G speeds remain consistently fast from the beginning to end of a download. That is why the difference in speed between 4G and 3G can be best felt when you are:
  • posting pictures and videos on Facebook,
  • watching videos on Facebook, Youtube, Pyone Play or any other content provider
  • watching mobile TV
  • downloading movies and , pictures or other files
  • playing multiplayer online games, like Clash of Clans
  • sending pictures on Viber, WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, BeeTalk
One of the most important advantages of 4G over 3G in Myanmar is that in peak hours 4G service works up to 5 times faster than 3G, without any slowdown or interruption in user experience.
4G is the better and the newer of the two technologies and there is absolutely no down-side to using 4G instead of 3G. You might use a bit more data, especially if you go wild when browsing, but 4G does not consume more data 3G, it is you browsing more for the same amount of time.
When you are connected to 4G network, voice calls will still be made on 3G network. However you don’t need to switch between networks, your device will do this automatically.
You can make video calls on 4G via Viber, Whatsapp, FB Messenger or any other app with similar functionality. Please, have in mind that video calls consume MBs (data), not minutes.
If your device shows 4G or LTE sign, it means you are using 4G services.
In order to use 4G services from Telenor you need:
  • Coverage: be in a city, where we offer 4G service. Currently Telenor has the widest 4G network, covering 21 cities across Myanmar. The list of cities with available 4G service you can see here.(add list of 4G cities)
  • 4G enabled device and SIM card:call *444# to check whether your SIM card and device are 4G enabled. If your SIM card is not 4G ready, visit the nearest branded Telenor store or any other store marked with the sticker ‘4G SIM available here’ and get your new 4G SIM free of charge. The only this thing you need is your ID card.
  • SIM card slot:Telenor SIM card should be in Slot 1, if you are using a dual-SIM telephone.
Most new phones are 4G-ready, except for some of the cheapest models. When you buy your device, ask the shop assistant if it is 4G ready.
Below are a few possible reasons:
  • If your phone and SIM card are 4G capable, try restarting your device.
  • Check the version of your phone’s operating system. For most devices you need the latest version in order to use 4G services.
  • If the 4G signal is weak (you are in a big building or very far from a 4G cell), the network will automatically route you to 3G, where you will experience a better service for you current location.
  • If you are making a voice call, your device will automatically switch to 3G network, as voice calls cannot be made via 4G network.
No, your device will automatically switch to 3G, if available or 2G. Once you are back to an area with available 4G LTE service, your device will automatically connect to it.
No. 4G is not more expensive than 3G. 4G LTE as such would cause no increase in the amount of data being used by a smartphone and there are no extra charges for 4G service.
No. The consumption of the data remains the same in 3G and 4G. The only difference between them will be the time. As 4G is faster than 3G, a regular movie of about 800 MB (not HD quality) will download in less than 15 min when connected to 4G. While in 3G it will take about 25 to 30 min.As 4G takes lesser time to downloadany type of content (videos, pictures) on any application (Facebook, Youtube, Viber), customers tend to think their balance is depleted faster.
Furthermore, because of fast speed, customers browse more, watch something new everytime and download something extra for the same amount of time they used to stay on internet when using 3G. Consequently, they use more data.
If you still experience a faster depletion of your balance, check one the following:
  • Format of videos you watch in Facebook and Youtube:Youtube, Facebook and other content providers may render videos in HD format, which makes the size of the video larger.
  • App update settings: some apps interact at regular intervals with their servers to look for updates and notifications, location services, further increasing the amount of data being used. Check your Background App Refresh settings for IPhone and Settings/ Auto update apps settings for Android.
All 4G devices offer in-built functionalities to check, control, optimize and limit your mobile data usage. If you don’t know how to do that, go to the nearest shop for mobile devices and ask for assistance. In addition, there are many available apps that would do the same for you, such as Data Usage, Data Man, My Data Manager, etc.
The data usage will be the same under 3G and 4G and data consumption will not show separately.
If you have purchased Data parcel or other Data pack from Telenor, the easiest way to monitor how much MBs you have left is to install MyTelenor App or dial *124#
We agree that 4G may tempt you to spend more data and because of that your balance may be depleted over a shorter period of time. That is why we have designed the Data parcel. This pack allows to use internet at very affordable price, to you to control your usage and to transfer MBs that you haven’t used to next period. Check the Data Parcel options on www.telenor.com.mm or dial *979*2*7#.
We would recommend that you to start with Data Parcel S - 2GB for 2,999Kyats. The parcels have a validity of 30 days, however, if you don’t use all included MBs, you can transfer them to the next month by purchasing a new Data Parcel.
